Not exactly. Spiritual abuse happens when religion, scripture, or spirituality is twisted to cause harm. Cultic abuse is the wider pattern of coercion and manipulation in a high-control group. Some cults are spiritual, meaning both forms of abuse happen at once.

Yes. Our Fear and Control report (2025) found that 91.5% of survivors said children were directly involved, and 56.9% had experienced under-18 exposure themselves. Abuse in childhood shapes identity, education, and family life from the start.

Are cults always big organisations, or can they be small groups and families?

Cults exist in all sizes. Some are global movements, while others are small groups or even families. Our Fear and Control report found 94.9% were part of a wider network. Size doesn’t define harm — small groups can be just as abusive.
